There is a symptom everyone has seen: the app works all day, movies play one after another, the guide is full, and at kick-off the picture starts freezing. It resumes, it reloads, it cuts in the 12th minute and comes back in the 15th. The reflex is to suspect your connection, because it is the only thing you can touch. It is almost always the wrong suspect.
What happens at 9 pm
An IPTV server is a machine with fixed bandwidth, sending each channel to each subscriber watching it. At 3 pm, its subscribers are spread across hundreds of channels and movies. At 9 pm on a match night, they are all on three channels. Each additional viewer takes their share of the capacity, and once it is reached, the server can no longer hold the bitrate for anyone: it sends data in bursts, the player drains its cache, the picture freezes.
That is exactly why it fails at the most frustrating hour. It is not bad luck, it is arithmetic: the bigger the match, the more people, the less bandwidth per person.
Many providers sell more subscriptions than their server can serve simultaneously, betting that not everyone watches at the same time. On match nights, the bet is lost.
Proving it in three tests
Do them during the match, not after: that is when the problem exists.
- The same channel on mobile data. On the phone, turn off Wi-Fi and open the channel that cuts. If it cuts on mobile data too, your Wi-Fi and router are cleared: two different networks, same result, same server.
- Another channel, at the same moment. Open a channel that has nothing to do with the match, a rolling news channel for instance. If it works, your connection holds; it is the channel everyone wants that cannot keep up. If it cuts too, the whole server is on its knees.
- The checker during the match. Run the checker on your playlist during the game. It tests a sample of streams and gives a health percentage. Run it again an hour after the final whistle: if the percentage climbs back, you have the server's saturation curve, in black and white.
Three consistent results, and you know the problem is not at your end. Keep them: that is what you will show the provider.
What really helps during the match
Switch variant. Most playlists offer the same channel in several qualities: SD, HD, FHD, sometimes 4K, and often duplicates marked "backup" or numbered. They are different streams, sometimes on different machines. An SD stream needs three to five times less bandwidth than an FHD one: when the server is at its limit, it is the one that still gets through. Go wired, to remove a variable. Wi-Fi adds its own micro-cuts, especially in a flat in the evening when all the neighbours are on it. It does not fix a saturated server, but it avoids stacking two problems. A TV or box on Ethernet is one suspect fewer.
Plan ahead. If your provider cuts at every big fixture, the question is no longer technical. A server that cannot hold the Champions League will not hold it next week either.
What is useless
- Reinstalling the app. The problem is not in the app: it shows what the server sends it.
- Switching apps. Every app plays the same stream from the same server. Another app will do the same thing, with a different spinner.
- Raising the buffer. A bigger cache delays the cut by a few seconds, it does not create bandwidth. When the server sends less than the stream consumes, the cache drains, whatever its size.
- A VPN. See the question above: a detour does not add capacity.
- Rebooting the router. That fixes router problems. Your three tests just showed it is not the router.
The neighbouring case: "limit reached"
A cut at 9 pm has another possible cause that looks very similar: someone else is watching on your subscription. A brother, a TV left on, a login that got passed around. The server is not saturating, it is refusing you a slot. The difference shows in the symptom: saturation stutters and freezes, the limit cuts dead after a few seconds and refuses to restart. Frequently asked questions
Why does it work perfectly in the afternoon?
Because the server has few people to serve. An IPTV server has fixed bandwidth; at 9 pm on a Champions League night, all its subscribers watch the same channels at the same time, and it cannot keep up.
Would switching to fibre fix it?
Not if the bottleneck is at the provider. Your fibre can receive 1 Gbit/s, it will only receive what the server manages to send. It fixes problems on your side, not theirs.
Is the SD variant really useful?
Often, yes. An SD stream needs three to five times less bandwidth than an FHD one. When the server is at its limit, that is what still gets through. Not pretty, but it does not cut.
Would a VPN help?
No. The server is saturated for everyone, whatever the path to reach it. A VPN adds a detour, it does not add capacity to the server.
My provider says it is my network.
Run the three tests in the guide and keep the results. If the same channel cuts on mobile data, if another channel cuts at the same moment, and if the checker shows stream health dropping during the match, it is not your network.
