- H.264 plays everywhere. HEVC (H.265) needs half the bandwidth for the same picture, but needs a decoder chip that older or cheaper devices do not have.

Every IPTV stream is compressed with a codec, and in practice there are two: H.264, the old universal one, and H.265, also called HEVC, the newer efficient one. Providers use both, often for the same channel in different qualities. The codec decides three things you notice: whether the channel plays at all on your device, how much of your connection it eats, and how it looks. This guide explains the difference in plain terms and, above all, how to choose without guessing.
What a codec does
Uncompressed video is enormous: a 1080p stream would need over a gigabit per second. A codec finds the redundancy, what does not change from one frame to the next, what the eye does not notice, and squeezes the stream to a few megabits. The decoder on your device does the reverse in real time, sixty times per second.
The better the codec, the smaller the stream at equal quality, and the more work for the decoder. That is the whole trade-off between H.264 and HEVC.
H.264: the one that plays everywhere
H.264 (also AVC) dates from 2003 and has been decoded in hardware by every phone, TV, box and computer for fifteen years. A 1080p H.264 stream runs at 4 to 8 Mbit/s, a 720p one at 3 to 5. It is the safe choice: whatever the device, it plays, without heating up and without stutter.
Its limit is 4K: at 4K, H.264 needs 25 to 40 Mbit/s to look good, which providers rarely serve.
HEVC: half the bandwidth, if the chip can
HEVC (H.265) dates from 2013 and roughly halves the bitrate for the same picture: 1080p at 3 to 5 Mbit/s, 4K at 15 to 25. It also carries 10-bit color and HDR. That is why providers use it for their FHD and 4K variants: they can serve more subscribers per server.
The price is decoding. HEVC needs a dedicated decoder in the chip, and:
- Apple: every iPhone since the iPhone 7 (2016) decodes HEVC in hardware, 4K included on recent models; every Apple TV 4K; every Mac with Apple Silicon and Intel Macs from about 2017. The Apple TV HD (2015) has no HEVC hardware and decodes it in software, fine in 1080p, not in 4K.
- Fire TV: the Stick 4K and 4K Max decode HEVC in 4K. The Stick Lite and HD decode it in 1080p.
- Android TV and Google TV: the Chromecast with Google TV, Sony TVs, the Nvidia boxes: yes, including 10-bit. The generic boxes sold with subscriptions: often 8-bit only, or a chip that decodes HEVC on paper and stutters in practice.
- Old smart TVs and boxes before 2016: usually no HEVC at all.
How it shows up in the app
The symptoms of a device that cannot decode a stream are precise, and the black screen guide details them:
- Black screen, sound plays. The audio decoded, the video did not. HEVC on a device without the decoder.
- Picture stutters, sound is fine. The decoder works but too slowly: HEVC 10-bit or 4K on a chip at its limit.
- Only the FHD and 4K variants are affected, the SD and HD ones play. The signature of a codec problem: the same channel, two encodings, one of them decodable.
None of that is fixed by reinstalling or by changing app: the decoder is in the chip.
Choosing the right variant
Providers usually offer each channel in several variants, marked SD, HD, FHD, 4K, sometimes with the codec in the name. The rule:
- Start with the highest variant your device is known to decode. Apple TV 4K, Chromecast with Google TV, Fire TV Stick 4K: take 4K or FHD. Fire TV Stick Lite, Apple TV HD, older boxes: FHD or HD.
- If it stays black or stutters, step down one variant. HD is almost always H.264 and plays everywhere.
- On match nights, step down anyway. A lower variant asks less of a saturated server, as the match night guide explains. Codec and bandwidth are two different reasons to pick HD, and both point the same way.
Bandwidth is rarely the constraint: an FHD HEVC stream at 5 Mbit/s fits in any fiber or cable line ten times over. What decides is the decoder, then the provider's server.
The provider's side
Two providers can serve the same channel in HEVC with very different results, because encoding quality varies: bitrate too low for the resolution, a cheap encoder, a source already compressed. A 4K HEVC stream at 8 Mbit/s looks worse than a good 1080p at the same bitrate. When a 4K channel disappoints, try the FHD variant before blaming your screen.
What next
AV1, the codec after HEVC, is decoded by recent phones, Google TV devices and Apple's newest chips, and used by YouTube and Netflix. IPTV providers have barely started. When they do, the same logic will apply: the variant your chip decodes is the one to pick, and the app will tell you which.

Frequently asked questions
Is HEVC better quality than H.264?
At the same bitrate, yes, clearly. At the same quality, HEVC uses roughly half the bandwidth. That is why providers use it for FHD and 4K. But quality also depends on how the provider encodes: a badly encoded HEVC stream looks worse than a well encoded H.264 one.
How do I know which codec a channel uses?
Often from its name: 4K, UHD, FHD and sometimes 'HEVC' or 'H265' in the label point to HEVC; SD and HD are usually H.264. In IPTV Guard the stream information shows the actual codec.
My box plays HEVC movies but not HEVC live channels.
Live streams at high bitrate and 10-bit color are harder than a movie file. A chip that manages one can choke on the other. The HD variant of the live channel is the practical answer.
What about AV1?
The next codec, more efficient than HEVC, decoded in hardware by recent phones, Google TV devices and Apple's latest chips. Almost no IPTV provider uses it yet. Nothing to do today.
Does 10-bit matter?
10-bit is the color depth used by HDR content and by many 4K streams. Some chips decode 8-bit HEVC and not 10-bit. Same symptom as no HEVC at all: black screen or stutter on the 4K variants only.
