On a desk, a Mac makes a better IPTV setup than a TV: a keyboard to search, a trackpad to navigate, a window you can resize, and picture in picture to keep a match in a corner while you work. Here is how to set it up properly, plus the Mac specifics no generic guide mentions.
What you need
A Mac on macOS 10.15 or later, and your subscription details: an M3U URL, or a server address, username and password for Xtream Codes. They are in your provider's email. To avoid chasing a fault that does not exist, test the playlist first: server status, channel count, expiry date.
1. Install from the Mac App Store
Open the Mac App Store, search for "IPTV Guard", install. It is an app signed and distributed by Apple: no installer, no security warning, no file to trust. It contains no channels.
2. Sign in
Create an account or sign in with the one from your iPhone. If you already entered your playlist on the phone, it appears on the Mac the moment you sign in, with your favorites and resume points: nothing to redo, skip to step 4.
3. Add the playlist
Paste the M3U URL, or the three Xtream Codes details. On Mac it is a real form: you see what you paste, you fix it with the keyboard. With Xtream, the app loads channels, movies and series within seconds and enriches them with posters and summaries.
4. Watch, from the keyboard
The player has shortcuts, and they change how you use it:

Picture in picture starts from the player controls: the video moves to a small floating window above other apps.
5. The Mac and the rest of the home
The account is the link. A movie started on the Mac shows up under "Resume" on the Apple TV. A match reminder received on the iPhone starts on the Mac if that is the screen that is on. And the Mac is a great place to pair a TV: the pairing screen on the Apple TV or the box shows a code, you enter it in IPTV Guard on the Mac, the TV receives the playlist.
Mac specifics
AirPods and headphones. When AirPods connect during playback, macOS does not always promote them to default output: sound keeps coming out of the speakers. IPTV Guard detects the new device and switches to it on its own. If you plug in a DAC or HDMI, pick it in the Mac's sound settings: that choice, the app leaves to you.
HEVC and 4K. Apple Silicon Macs decode H.265 in hardware without heating up. On an Intel Mac older than six years, 4K HEVC streams can stutter: pick the HD version of the channel when it exists, the player offers it in its options.
Multiple windows. Each window plays one stream, and each stream counts as one connection with your provider. With a single-connection subscription, the second window cuts the first. See the guide on the connection limit.
The Mac goes to sleep. During playback the app keeps the display awake. If the screen still turns off, check the energy settings: a forced sleep rule takes precedence over the app.
When it does not work

Which Mac do I need?
Any Mac on macOS 10.15 or later. Apple Silicon Macs decode HEVC and 4K effortlessly; on an older Intel Mac, stay with HD.
Can I open two channels at once?
The player plays one stream per window, and your subscription probably limits simultaneous connections. Two channels in parallel count as two connections.
Sound comes out of the speakers even though my AirPods are connected.
When an audio device appears during playback, macOS does not always promote it to default output. IPTV Guard switches to the AirPods itself when they connect.
Is the app the same as on iPhone?
Yes, with the interface adapted to keyboard and mouse, and without offline downloads for now.
