IPTV on an LG Smart TV: The Real Options in 2026 (webOS, AirPlay, External Box)

LG's webOS is the more pleasant of the two big TV systems: quick, with the pointer remote, and less locked than Samsung's Tizen. It is still a closed world for IPTV. The LG Content Store has a handful of IPTV apps, they change, and none of them is a full player. This guide gives the three ways that actually work in 2026, and the one to keep.

The limits of webOS for IPTV

A TV system is built for the big streaming apps, which bring their own player and their own content. An IPTV app is the opposite: it must play whatever a provider sends, in any codec, keep a guide of thousands of channels fresh, and take a playlist URL from the user. webOS gives an app a browser-like environment to do that in. It works for a simple channel list; it falls short for a real player with offline downloads, background monitoring or proper HEVC and audio format support.

The result is what you see on the Content Store: apps that ask you to create an account on their website, upload your playlist there, sometimes pay a small activation, then display a list of channels on the TV. Serviceable, not great.

Option 1: AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad

LG TVs from 2019 onwards support AirPlay 2. On the TV, press Home and look for the AirPlay app, or check the settings. If it is there, nothing needs installing on the TV.

Install IPTV Guard on the iPhone, add your playlist with the phone's keyboard, open a channel, tap AirPlay in the player and choose the TV. The picture is on the TV, the phone is the remote and the guide.

This is the right answer for occasional viewing: a match, a movie night. The phone has to stay on and on the same network, so it is not a whole-household setup.

Option 2: an external box, for everyday use

An HDMI port turns the LG TV into what it is best at: a very good screen. Three boxes run IPTV Guard:

With any of them the playlist never gets typed on a remote: the TV shows a code, the phone confirms it, and your account's playlist appears with favorites and resume points.

A setting worth changing on the TV: turn off TruMotion for the HDMI input the box is on. Interpolated motion makes live sport look like a soap opera and adds latency.

Option 3: an app from the LG Content Store

If you cannot plug anything in, the Content Store apps are the fallback. Before choosing one: read where your playlist goes (most upload it to the app maker's server), check whether a fee applies, and test the playlist with the checker so you know the subscription works before blaming the app.

Expect channels and a basic guide. Do not expect resume points, offline, or alerts when the playlist goes down.

When it does not work
